As so we now draw a close on the 2010/2011 season, and in turn a close on the Leeds U Rock Paper Scissors Society. We were able to go out on a bang, with a record attendence as well as a few shocks.
Regular Tournament
1st Prize: A T-Shirt saying “I won the last ever L.U.R.P.S”, a royal wedding calendar, a badgemaker, a back massager, the book “Budo, The Martial Ways of Japan”, 1000 Insults or 1000 Jokes.
2nd Prize: A royal wedding calendar, 1000 Insults or 1000 Jokes
3rd Prize: Some cheap ass rice

The goodies.
An astonishing 30 people participated in the main tournament (taking us by complete surprise). At the end of round one, 26 players still had tokens. Remaining competitors were Florence (Record breaking 42), Kosuke (26), Carley (25), Tom (24), Charlie (23), Shez (20), Jason (18), Ai (18), Hugo (17), Yoshi (17), Max (16), Shunsuke (14), Jamie G (12), Rob (12), Sarah (12), Aleasha (11), Hannah (11), Diana (10), Darlo (9), Noriko (9), Vikash (8), Miu (7), Chieko (5), Ged (5), Soji (4), Mamiya (2). Those who didn’t survive round one were Grace, Neil, Kazuya and Hokuto.
Unfortunately, due to an administrative error (in that Darlo misread Ai’s score as a 16) Ai didn’t go through to the next round. Instead, a match was played between Hugo and Yoshi, who both scored 17) to decide who took the last quarter final slot, with Hugo winning. Unfortunately this wasn’t noticed until after the final, and after it was realistically too late to change anything. As Ai’s final finish was crucial to the league, it was decided (with Ai’s approval, and after a massive heap of apologies) that in the SPRock 7 Tournament, Ai would take the top spot, and for each victory it would count as if she had won that respective tournament match.

SPRock 7 Tournament
The top seven competitors based on round ones ticket count made up The Panel. Members of this group stood to win a Xylophone and a Sliding Whistle if they could win seven matches in a row. The prize for a non-panel member stopping the run was a Sliding Whistle. The left over prize would be given away in an all-versus-Darlo tournament (like how the Simpsons Egg was given away in March). Due to the previous error, as well as several participants having to leave early, the order of participants was slightly adjusted. As the highest scoring panel member, Kosuke was given the first chance to win against Ai.

Ai vs Kosuke (1 win) (Ai receives 3 league points for finishing in the Top 8)
Carley vs Kosuke (1 win)
Carley vs Tom (2 wins)
Carley vs Charlie (3 wins) (possibly the best sounding match all season)
Carley vs Shez (4 wins)
Carley vs Jason (5 wins)
Carley vs Yoshi (6 wins)
Carley vs Shunsuke (Shunsuke ends the run, winning a sliding whistle).
A particularly stunning final SPRock7 tournament which was moments away from producing a first 7 win straight. Congratulations to Shunsuke for his win, but also to Carley for setting such a top-notch record. Max, who pioneered the SPRock7 Tournament, also donated a special prize to be shared between the two finalists. The prize was a ticket to Tuesdays Euro-Millions draw, and given on the condition that if it wins a presentation would be done for the LURPS site. The numbers (a lucky dip) were 11-25-35-39-40 and the Lucky Stars 05-06. The raffle number was MWF873482. Though they did not win on the raffle, we’re thrilled to say that they DID win on the main draw. They matched 2 numbers (and no stars), netting them a total of £2.80 (£1.40 each). A presentation will be made when both players are available.
Super Xylophone and Sliding Whistle Tournament
In the last-man-standing tournament where everyone plays against Darlo (where you could stay in by either drawing or winning), the prizes of a Xylophone and Sliding Whistle were given away. We had a new wave of fresh faces in this tournament, taking the days total participants up past 40 people. Today the prizes went to Aleasha, who despite holding onto 11 tokens in the first tournament, did not manage to qualify any further.
The League – The Final Three
And so the league came to an end, but who would be taking the gold?

Ok, all three are goldish. But clearly one is better than the other two.
Prior to the tournament, it had been calculated that Tom would definately be winning a trophy. As Ai was seven points behind him, Tom only needed to ensure he took 4th place to guarantee him the first place position. Fortunately for Tom, his Top 8 position was enough to see him lift the first place trophy with a final total of 27 points.
From here on in, anyone from 2nd to 19th had the potential to take home a trophy (depending of course not only on their own performance but also other competitors). This was further driven home by the absence of some of the high league position holders, particularly then joint-third-place Hiroaki. Though unfortunately for Chieko, Aleasha, Max and Darlo, survival from round one just was not enough.
This left the trophies available to Ai (2nd, 17pts), Hannah (Jnt 3rd, 16pts), Ged (Jnt 5th, 15pts) and Shez (Jnt 5th, 15pts).
Hannah and Ged had survived round one, taking Hannah to 18 points and removing Ged from any possibly trophy place. However, Ai’s 3 points for making it to the top 8, giving her 20 points altogether, ensured that she would definately get a trophy (either 2nd or 3rd). It all depended on Shez’s performance. Had Shez beat Jason in the 3rd/4th Playoff, he would have reached 21 points and ended in second place. However, his tournament 4th place finish gave the second place trophey to Ai, placing him 3rd and pushing Hannah into 4th place.
And so the evening came to an end. And so the season came to an end. And so the society, started in February 2008, finally came to an end. Following the trophy presentation, Max presented Darlo with a handmade medal and a bottle of Appleton Special Rum (which Darlo was and still is incredibly thankful for).
We do hope that everyone who has come along to one of our events, whether participating or just observing, has enjoyed themselves and take the noble sport of Rock Paper Scissors with them wherever they go. Thank you all very much for getting involved, especially people who have come a long way to participate in Leeds. We’d like to give huge thanks to FAB Cafe for being so accomodating to us, and also to the Old Bar at Leeds Union where we had our humble beginnings. Thanks to the guys at Wacky Nation for making us feel welcome at the UK Championships. And not forgetting the guys at the World Rock Paper Scissors Society for being the trigger that got this gravy train going.
We’re going to be having a joint Otley Run event along with the Leeds Japanese Society on Saturday the 25th June, but more details about that will follow later. Remember if you’re interested in taking over this society from next year, please use the contact form below.
Thank you all.
