UK Championships 2010

November 15, 2010

Well folks we’re back from our trip down to London and our first attempt at the UK Rock Paper Scissors Championships with considerable success. With over 100 participants and a very heated atmosphere, we’re pleased to say that one of our team members made it to the final match.

Tournament matches were played across a specially marked table.

Alongside the main tournament was a street-rps tournament, in which people gambled with fake money, the winner receiving £30. Whilst for a long period at the start the LURPS team had a profitable amount of money, as time went on and bets became higher, tension accumulated and we were soon knocked out of the side competition.

Gambling in the Street Competition

Due to the odd number of competitors most of the pre-registered players effectively received a bye past round one, much to the joy of team captain Darlo, who, like when he was at the World Championships in 2005, considered getting past round one to be a victory in itself.

First out of our four-strong team was Nao Fujihara, currently ranked 7th in the LURPS league, who was unfortunately knocked out in round 2 after first taking the lead.

Next out was Darlo, currently ranked 1st in the LURPS league, who was knocked out in the third round by a subsequent quarter finalist.

Making it to the final 16 was Youhei Wakuta, currently ranked joint third in the LURPS league, who was knocked out after taking an early lead.

Huge congratulations go to our top performing member, Tomoko Yanagida, currently ranked joint fifth in the LURPS league, who successfully made it to the semi final. After taking a lead in her match with subsequent tournament runner up Ed Blake, she unfortunately was knocked out. However, in the third-place play off (which took place after the final itself) she shone brightly against Adrian Hurrell, and took the third place prize, a bottle of wine. Tomoko also has the honour of being the best female competitor, after knocking out Victoria Curtis in the quarter final.

And so a fantastic night came to a close. Congratulations to Paul Lewis for winning the tournament and taking home the (adorably inflatable) trophy and the £100 cash prize. Our team has now arrived back in Leeds and will soon be preparing for our own next tournament, which will be in December.

See you then!

  1. Hello LURPS,

Good write-up of the event. I think I lost to Youhei in the 2nd round :-( Video here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlfGO6CAWVI

We’ll be back in 2011! Perhaps the LURPS would like to face the newly formed Guild of Rock Paper Scissors (GoRPS) in a team challenge match?

    All the best,

    Richard
